Tasting Notes

Fresh looking with a deep, dark ruby colour and light purple hues. Pure cabernet. Fresh and lifted with the classic aromas of cassis, blackberry, violets and a light leafiness. Digging deeper, black cherry, red raspberries and notes of light cedar and wet tobacco that all swirl around that core of ripe fruit. This is elegant, medium bodied with a lightness of touch. Soft, velvet like tannins with just enough pippy crunch and firmness are there to reign in those fruit flavours and provide a sense of refreshment. Plus there’s a herbal nod that champions this variety before the red fruited acidity stretches the wine to its ultimate conclusion. Classic Yarra Cabernet. Taught, fragrant, lip smacking and refreshing.

Vineyard Notes

Oakridge Vineyard, Winery Block. North-facing at 120 meters above sea level. Planted in the grey alluvial loams of Coldstream in 1996 to a mixed clonal selection and cropped at 3.5 t/Ha.

Winemaker's Notes

All grapes hand harvested and sorted prior to gently destemming to fermenter. After a four day cold maceration, fermentation commenced and peaked at 30°C. Pump-overs were conducted twice per day, and post ferment, the wine remained on skins for an additional 4 weeks prior to pressing. The wine then spent 15 months in French oak barrels maturing before blending and bottling.

Vintage Notes

A long cool growing season with average cropping levels and abundant flavour has resulted in wines of outstanding varietal flavour. Flowering occurred in late October, fruit set in December and harvest on April 7th at 13.5° baume.

The Real Review - 98pts

“Deep red-purple colour; bright. Crushed mulberry and cassis on the nose, very ripe fruit doing most of the talking. A subtle patina of pencilly oak. The palate is loaded with concentrated fruit and very drying tannins and this results in a cheek-sucking grip at the end. Full bodied, solid cabernet that will reward time in the cellar—indeed, it needs it. It’ll be worth the wait. Outstanding cabernet.” – Huon Hooke

Halliday Wine Companion - 97pts

“Fruit from a 1996-planted vineyard. Four weeks post-fermentation maceration, matured in French barriques (35% new) for 15 months. Virtually identical winemaking to the Original Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon but, as always, this is the denser, more powerful and structured wine. On the nose there’s a core of perfectly ripened black fruits, crushed violets, dark chocolate and graphite. The medium bodied, firmly structured and persistent palate is equally good, and anyone fortunate enough to still have a bottle 10-15 years (if not longer) from now will be well rewarded.” – Philip Rich
