Background

Our 864 range features exceptional wines from specific and single blocks, produced in small quantities and released in only the best years. An Oakridge 864 wine is terroir-driven. Made to demonstrate the importance of time and place with every bottle, and always a tribute to tradition, these wines are ready to drink now or cellar.

Tasting Notes

Deep red with a fresh purple hue. Intense, fresh and concentrated aromas of blackberries, cassis and red currants fly out of the glass. Pleasing lifts of mountain herbs, particularly rosemary and sage, combined with violets present the full display of classic cool climate cabernet. An open fire on a dark and stormy night with a roast lamb in the oven. Complexity to its core, with a dusting of char, tobacco and red olives brining on the stove rounding out the aromas. On the palate, a bright and crunchy entry of currants and blackberries is on youthful display, before a wave of serious cabernet flavours and textures envelope the mouth. The tannins are melted, the balance is impeccable. A wine of line and length and supporting complex flavours and aromas.

Vineyard Notes

Oakridge Vineyard, Winery Block. North-facing at 90 metres above sea level. Planted in the grey alluvial soils of Coldstream in 1996 to a mixed clonal selection and cropped at 5.7 t/Ha.

Winemaker's Notes

All grapes hand-picked and sorted prior to destemming to fermenter. After a three day cold maceration, fermentation commenced and peaked at 25°C. Pump-overs were conducted twice per day and post ferment, the wine remained on skins for an additional four weeks prior to pressing. The wine then spent 15 months in French oak barrels maturing before blending and bottling.

Vintage Notes

A vintage defined by cool, wet conditions, low crops and harvesting late into autumn. The resulting wines have great depth of flavour and vibrant, balanced acidities. Flowering occurred in late October, fruit set in December and harvest on April 26th at 12.9° baume.

Halliday Wine Companion - 97pts

“Fruit from a ’96-planted vineyard. Matured in French barriques (35% new) for 15 months. A gorgeous deep purple. Aromas of crème de cassis, black cherry, crushed violets and a little graphite on the beautifully perfumed and complex bouquet. The medium- to full-bodied palate has terrific presence with superfine and persistent tannins making this a wine that can be opened now but is destined to age superbly over a decade and probably longer.” – Philip Rich

Robert Parker Wine Advocate - 97pts

“The 2023 864 Cabernet Sauvignon is superb. The tannins—let us go straight to those for now—are present in every facet of the wine. They are malleable and ductile, ultra fine and yet supportive, and I find this to be an astoundingly sophisticated example of Yarra Valley Cabernet. The bouquet leads with pressed flowers and sandalwood, forest floor/moss, scraped vanilla pod, sweet roasted marrow, cardamom and raspberry leaf. What a wine. Sheesh. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink – 2025 – 2038.” – Erin Larkin

The Wine Front - 95pts

“Svelte. Sure-footed. Well extended. In fact, classically styled from start to finish. Boysenberry into violets and blackcurrant, bay leaf notes, perhaps some undergrowth, a finishing touch of smoked cedar, the latter modest at most. This has flavour and length and, at the same time, feels refreshing, which I love to see in red wine in general, but especially in well-structured cabernet. This is a joy to drink, and will of course cellar beautifully.” – Campbell Mattinson
