Tasting Notes

Light, bright gold in appearance with a subtle green hue, this wine opens with bold aromas of grapefruit and spice. Once that initial burst settles, an incredibly detailed web of fruit, florals, and spice unfolds - revealing notes of mint fudge, gunflint, and a dash of sea spray and nori. On the palate, ripe citrus, white peach, and green melon take center stage. Hints of cashew and prosciutto lend a captivating nod to umami, while the texture is truly beguiling - striking a perfect balance between grapefruit pith and fleshy gloss for an effortless flow. It is a finely woven tapestry of texture and flavour that lingers long after the glass is empty. How can a Chardonnay hold so much complexity and presence? Unquestionably one of the finest Funder & Diamond releases we have ever seen.

Vineyard Notes

Funder & Diamond Vineyard. North facing at 240 metres above sea level. Close planted in the red volcanic soils of Wandin East in 1990 using the P58 clone and cropped at 5.0 t/Ha

Winemaker's Notes

All grapes hand harvested and sorted prior to whole bunch pressing directly to French oak puncheons for natural fermentation. 20% of the barrels were new. Post-fermentation, the wine was matured on its fermentation lees for 10 months in barrel followed by a further six months on lees in tank prior to bottling after a single filtration.

Vintage Notes

A cool wet spring and summer followed by a dry and temperate autumn has delivered balanced crops in near perfect harvesting conditions. The resulting wines show elegant varietal flavours, freshness, and balanced acidities. Flowering occurred in late October, fruit set in December and harvest on February 27th at 12.5° baume.

Halliday Wine Companion - 99pts

“From the Funder & Diamond vineyard, planted in Wandin East in ’90. Very brightly coloured. What a wonderful wine, even by Oakridge Funder & Diamond’s reputation as one of, if not this country’s greatest, chardonnay. Aromas of stone fruits, gently toasted hazelnuts and subtle oyster shell. With its latent power and structure, this flows mellifluously across the palate. You could put this in a lineup of any great chardonnay, made anywhere in the world, and it’ll look good. Trust me. A steal at this price and a wine destined to cellar beautifully over the next decade, if not longer.” – Philip Rich
