Tasting Notes

Deep red edging into purple, an awesome bouquet of dark cherry, blackberry, black olive, and mocha is on extravagant display. White pepper and violets play in harmony, while graphite and a floral lift showcase the judicious use of whole-bunch fermentation. On the palate, similar voluminous fruits take center stage - led again by blackberry, dark plum, and a hint of rhubarb - all sewn together with baking spices and pepper. A nuance reminiscent of Lindt Excellence Dark Orange chocolate provides a delightful bitter contrast to the plush fruit. The mid-palate is beautifully weighted, balancing fruit sweetness against sinewy, matte-textured tannins. If this wine were a hug, it would be a warm and gentle one.

Vineyard Notes

Oakridge Vineyard, Close Planted Block. East-facing at 90 metres above sea level. Planted at 5,200 plants per hectare in the grey alluvial loams of Coldstream using the R6VW28 done and cropped at 6.6 t/Ha.

Winemaker's Notes

Hand-picked and sorted prior to destemming 70% of the berries into an open fermenter on top of 30% whole bunches, After a three-day cold maceration, fermentation spontaneously commenced peaking at 25°C The fermenter was regularly pumped over and plunged during a three-week fermentation before the wine was pressed to French oak puncheons for a 14 month maturation on its gross lees.

Vintage Notes

A cool wet spring and summer followed by a dry and temperate autumn has delivered balanced crops in near perfect harvesting conditions. The resulting wines show elegant varietal flavours, freshness, and balanced acidities. Flowering occured in Noember, fruit set in late December and harvested on March 12th at 13.6° baumé.

Halliday Wine Companion - 97+pts

“From an east-facing block in Coldstream and planted at 5300 vines per ha. 30% whole bunches. A very bright crimson purple. This is clearly excellent, with dark fruits, pure violets and exotic spices creating a fragrant and pure bouquet. Very even and energetic on the palate. The tannins, as always with this wine, are present but polished. A class act to drink now, with food, and over the next decade at least.” – Philip Rich
