Tasting Notes

Dark red with a vibrant, blush-red hue, the wine immediately captivates with sophisticated aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, and dark blue fruits, underpinned by an aromatic array of wild mountain herbs - notably oregano, rosemary, and thyme. This herbal lift brings a fresh, classic Yarra Valley Cabernet character to the forefront. On the palate, flavours arrive in waves: black and red currants mingle with effortlessly melted tannins, gently lapping like a timeless tide. Layers of cassis, tobacco, and subtle char add alluring detail to a finish that is long, fine, and focused. The godfather of Yarra Valley grape varieties delivers once again.

Vineyard Notes

Oakridge Vineyard, Winery Block. North-facing at 90 metres above sea level. Planted in the grey alluvial soils of Coldstream in 1996 to a mixed clonal selection and cropped at 5.3 t/Ha.

Winemaker's Notes

All grapes hand-picked and sorted prior to destemming to fermenter. After a three day cold maceration, fermentation commenced and peaked at 26°C. Pump-overs were conducted twice per day and post ferment, the wine remained on skins for an additional four weeks prior to pressing. The wine then spent 15 months in French oak barrels maturing before blending and bottling.

Vintage Notes

A cool wet spring and summer followed by a dry and temperate autumn has delivered balanced crops in near perfect harvesting conditions. The resulting wines show elegant varietal flavours, freshness, and balanced acidities. Flowering occurred in late October, fruit set in December and harvest on March 28th at 12.8° baume.

Halliday Wine Companion - 96+pts

“Fruit from a ’96-planted vineyard. Fermented on skins for six weeks in total and matured in French barriques (35% new). A medium-bright crimson purple. A supremely perfumed and refined cabernet. Gentle blackcurrant, pure violets and a little cedar sitting discreetly in the background. Finely detailed on the palate, with silky, long-chained tannins that caress the mouth. Finishes long. Not the most powerful or long-lived cabernet that Oakridge has made, but certainly one of the most elegant.” – Philip Rich
