Tasting Notes

Cherry red with a blushing hue. A complex and evolving mix of fresh fruit and spice aromas immediately leaps from the glass. Red fruits, specifically raspberries and strawberries, intertwine with notes of concentrated cherries. This fruit core is beautifully lifted by a heady perfume of roses, potpourri, and warm spice, particularly cinnamon. Earthy undergrowth notes provide depth, resulting in an incredibly expressive and complex array of evolving aromas. The entry is glossy, delivering a burst of fruit sweetness, featuring lip-smacking strawberries and cherries. Despite the appearance of lightweight red fruits, the palate reveals a dense fruit concentration. The plush mid-palate leads into satin-like, fine tannins that fan out into a sinewy latticework of complex flavours. This is a journey of discovery, offering something different with every taste, keeping the consumer continually engaged. The wine is ultimately full of character.

Vineyard Notes

This wine was sourced from the north facing Hazeldene Vineyard, sited in the red volcanic soils of Gladysdale.

Winemaker's Notes

A traditional winemaking approach was used to produce this wine: whole berry/bunch fermentation in open vessels for two weeks followed by an 11 month maturation in French oak vessels.

Vintage Notes

A cool wet spring and summer followed by a dry and temperate autumn has delivered balanced crops in near perfect harvesting conditions. The resulting wines show elegant varietal flavours, freshness, and balanced acidities.

Product Reviews (3)

The Real Review - 91pts

“Bright, light red-purple colour; smoky charcuterie, toasty oak, and dried porcini aromas; the palate is light bodied and finely textured, with delicate lacy tannins and real refinement, if not power or heft. Very good in a lighter, finer style, for poultry, not steak.” – Huon Hooke

Halliday Wine Companion - 96pts

“From ’98 plantings of MV6 at Gladysdale. 20% whole bunches. Bright crimson. This was a touch closed initially but opened up nicely to reveal aromas of ripe strawberry and pomegranate together with a little dried rose. More structured and slightly richer than the Willowlake, this finishes sinewy and long. Another delicately framed pinot from Oakridge in ’24 but one that will still be looking good five to seven years from now.” – Philip Rich

The Wine Front - 94+pts

“This is a light, sinewy, reductive Pinot Noir with character to burn and the charm to go with it. It’s a clear, easy, no-brainer Buy for me. It tastes of red cherries and cranberries, orange peel, twiggy spices and woodsmoke, with undergrowth and leaf-matter notes in the background. Style-wise it falls clearly into the light-but-insistent category, the tannin sinewy and fine but also somehow a propellant of the fruit. The finish is an extended encore. The quality here is excellent.” – Campbell Mattinson
