Tasting Notes

Bright, vivacious straw with a lime tinge to the hue. Incredibly vivid aromas of white peach, pine-lime splice and green melon burst out of the glass. There is power and generosity to the aromas, yet an underlying nod to refinement and all the best bits of modern Australian chardonnay. Flint and spice play complimentary notes to an overwhelmingly intriguing set of aromas. On the palate, there is a glass-like transfer of intense lemon/lime flavours to the palate. Glossy white peaches add volume, with grapefruit pith and chalky texture getting the salivation juices flowing. A chardonnay of gravitas and poise, all at once.

Vineyard Notes

This wine was sourced from the north facing Willowlake Vineyard, sited in the red volcanic soils of Gladysdale.

Winemaker's Notes

A traditional winemaking approach was used to produce this wine: handpicking and whole bunch pressing directly into 500 litre French oak puncheons for a natural fermentation followed by 14 months maturing on lees.

Vintage Notes

A cool wet spring and summer followed by a dry and temperate autumn has delivered balanced crops in near perfect harvesting conditions. The resulting wines show elegant varietal flavours, freshness, and balanced acidities.

Product Reviews (3)

The Real Review - 93pts

“Light, bright colour. Cashewy nutty aromas, liberal but well balanced oak, intensely lemony on the palate with tightness and tension, the finish long and laser-like. Good potential here. Will build complexity with more time in bottle.” – Huon Hooke

Halliday Wine Companion - 96+pts

“In an interesting development, the Vineyard Series is now taken out of barrel and sits in tank for six months on its lees, echoing the production of 864. Pristine, with aromas of nectarine, pink grapefruit and white flowers. There’s real drive on the chalk-inflected, impeccably balanced and long palate. Built to last and will still be going strong eight to 10 years from now.” – Philip Rich

The Wine Front - 95 pts

“Wow the flavour. Willowlake for the win here. Green pineapple, fresh peach, citrus, spice, cedar and assorted yellow stone fruits. It hits and it impresses, from the outset, and it sails long too. There’s just so much juicy, intense, impressive flavour here. This is an outstanding wine, and outstanding buying.” – Campbell Mattinson
